Two pivotal pro-inflammatory enzymes in cartilage are the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). They induce proinflammatory actions through the production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).
